„Before takeoff please take a moment to get acquainted with our safety instructions.“ What works in aviation might also be helpful for lifting off your meetings.
Enable all participants of a meeting to focus completely on the meeting’s agenda and the other participants. With more empathy you are going to find better results.

STEP 1: CHOOSE A CHECK-IN QUESTION
Design an open question which can not be answered with yes or no. It should be about the people who take part in the meeting, their contribution or their current condition.
- „What am I thinking about that I should let the other participants know?“
- „What can I contribute to the meeting so that it turns out well?“
- „What went extremely well in our last meeting that is worth repeating today?“
STEP 2: ANSWER YOUR CHECK-IN QUESTION IN SHORT SENTENCES
After every participant has spent a while thinking about the question it is time for the answers. Each person says their answer and listens to the other people answering the question. Keep it short. Maybe one or two sentences are enough to express your thoughts. Each participant in the group is supposed to answer the question. Pay attention to your reactions and thoughts when listening to the others’ answers.
STEP 3: START YOUR MEETING
After everybody answered the question you can begin your meeting.
04 BOOSTER: PARK OTHER TOPICS
If a person of your group wants to talk more about a certain thought or topic, don’t extend the time frame of the check-in. It is no appropriate format to discuss things in detail. Decide to park the topics on a list and refer to them after the check-in is finished. You can park them on a flipchart, on sticky notes or in an app.
